I feel like at some point there should be something you can do to cure Mai of her insensitivity. It certainly seems as if she would prefer that.

That is...impossible. Listen to what Komari says about her great-great-granddaughters. They have six senses wired into brains made for five, and it is driving them insane as a side effect. Well, maybe insane is too strong a word, but certainly neurotic.

Miko has embraced the insanity and hunger. Mai needs to smoke winterstem 24/7 to shut down her senses to avoid being overwhelmed.

To "cure" her, if that is even possible, would mean to get rid of the very thing that forms the core of her identity and makes her and her sister useful to others, and she does not want that despite the constant price to be paid.

Not everything needs to be “fixed”. While Mai being insensate is a bit disadvantageous for her and may be aggravating to some people, she deals with it just fine and is able to self-medicate to an extent with winterstem. Most importantly, she’s perfectly fine with things as they are as far as we can tell because she can manage and her health (both physical and mental) isn’t suffering. And as Observer pointed out, it’s a side effect of her gift. There are always tradeoffs to having any sort of advantage/disadvantage and for Mai and Miko, it’s being hyperaware of everything as a result of being able to directly see auras and spirits. Their respective neuroses simply comes with the territory and is firmly intertwined. There’s no cure for that; they can only cope with it their own ways and frankly they’re managing just fine.

I personally see their condition as similar to neurodivergence IRL. The cons exist and people tend to be concerned about them (to put it mildly), but we just learn to cope with and manage them, while making the most of the pros we have. Whatever the cause of these conditions, they are simply natural variations in the population with different sets of adaptations.

And frankly, why would you force everyone to be the same? Even neurotypicals have their variations and have differing personalities. Not everyone has to be a bubbly social butterfly regardless of any medical/spiritual condition.

I think that's the salient point. You can't fix what's not broken. You'd be trying to get Mai to conform with the rest of the world.

Right now, Miko and Mai are in a position of responsibility within their clan. They meet petitioners to the clan shrine and serve as shrine maidens. Most of all they are trusted with a shrine dedicated to their god. So, even if there was something "wrong" with Mai, is it doing any harm to the shrine? To the clan? Are they causing a problem outside the den? No? Then why try to fix it?

Here's the thing. Its not that Mai is insensitive, its that she feels too much. She's getting so much information at once, its hard for her brain to process all of that. But on the other hand, it could be a sign that the twins are touched by Keros.

But no, don't try to fix what isn't broken.

Ugh. Sensory overload's horrible. Which is part of why I hate loud noises, bad smells/tastes, unpleasant tactile sensations... Honestly, all of it.

People who think super-senses are a great power never had to actually deal with them.

They’re great only if you’re doing something that requires them. Otherwise it’s hell when you can’t just tune/blot them out. :negativeman:

Hahahaha what's wrong silly outsider? Can't make foxgirls cum? Hahahaha 1000 hardened kitsune cock is the only thing that gets these girls hot under the collar.

But yeah, TBH there's a lot of damaged goods among the foxes. "Fixing" all of them sadly won't happen.

It's basically self-selected. When you look at the colonies, there're basically a few reasons why these people are here:
  1. You were born here, luck of the draw. Even so, you're likely the descendant of one or more of the following categories of people.
  2. You're an explorer, an adventurer, a pioneer. Your thirst for new experiences and discoveries has overwhelmed your hold on polite society; you've come to the colonies seeking adventure and opportunity.
  3. You're an exile. You may not be a weirdo, but circumstances have forced you away from polite society. Debt, perhaps, or some other extenuating circumstances.
  4. You're a weirdo, a societal reject. Whatever the cause, it's not something outright criminal, but still well enough for you to be shunned from respectable society and people would rather you didn't exist.
The colonies are a dumping ground for all these kinds of people, so it's not surprising that they're more... colourful than what would be if you took a slice of their parent population.

Maybe you're just some freak nympho who really digs pregnancy. The colonies are the fringe society that accepts all.

Colony 9
Maybe you're grossly in debt for the Foxkuza, maybe Keros yanked all your extra tails off in exchange for bigger T&A.
Please make this a thing and cap off the questline off with a shirtless fistfight with the evil Foxkuza boss on the roof of a large building.

In Kiyoko's case, trying to return to her ancestral holdings and position would cause severe political and theological problems. There is an event about it.

Kitsune retainer: "A thousand apologies, Mistress Kiyoko. It would seem that when we thought you had died, your holdings became the property of your niece. Unfortunately, your great nephew accidentally chipped your favourite jade teapot when he was barely three summers old...."
Kiyoko, eyes blazing like fire: "不名誉の前に死"
