I was confused myself about the "adjacent" part until I was told Adjacent also apply to the diagonal in which case the description is not technically incorrect although rather confusing to non English native language, or maybe even native English speaking people to whom "adjacent" is an unfamiliar word.
Adjacent just means that it borders something.
Think of nations, as long as they share a common border, they are adjacent.
I am not a native speaker, but I am surprised how that that word could confuse people. If you do not know/understand it, you would look it up.
Either way, you would read that it just means that two things neighbor each other.

You might quite possibly be right that if one did not know or understand a word they might look it up. There is just no reason to look it up when you are convinced you know the word and in part you do but your understanding is not complete. I don't think your first thought would be to look up a word you think you know but then get confused when the word does not behave in a way you thought it ought to. I think the most common human reaction in such a case is "well I am 100% sure that I am right in this matter and if I am right then the thing in front of me must be wrong."
