So I started playing earlier today. Got to penny and then got PO'd cuz the bugs kept killing me so I started playing with the save editor.
Now I'm wondering what the best gear to start off would be. Any advice on how to set myself up for a good playthrough.

Also, I've gotten offworld and I REALLY dont wanna birth a tentacle. any idea how not to do that?

If you're already pregnant, there's nothing you can do to end the pregnancy without the Save Editor. If you have a save before leaving, you can sell the egg to V-Ko for a good amount of cash. If you don't, you can skip to the end by going to Tavros Station and waiting at the Nursery's 2nd floor.

For gear, are you looking at going melee or ranged? You generally don't want to do both, in the long run. In the short term, it won't make much diffenence, since you only get 1/2 (Physique or Aim) to (Melee or Ranged) damage. Are you planning on using the Save Editor for the equipment or things you can get normally?

The ZK Rifle from 'Crazy' Carl is good for most characters. I'd wait until level 3 before fighting his Machina, though. The Two-Handed Spear from the Vanae in the South-Eastern Jungle is a good starter melee weapon.

The Atma Armor found in the Vanae Jungle is a good starter Armor for Tech Specialists, since your Shields should protect you most of the time. I've used it all the way to 4th Probe planet, where it finally got replaced.

If you're female, you might be able to Tease the Naleen in the Southern Jungle via Chest (depending on Breast size, probably). Since they're level 2, you can get enough XP to level up to level 2 in one fight. Watch out for Mimbranes.

You may want to save the stat points you get at level up, and use Slow Stat Gain instead. Training Opportunities.

You give up most of the progression that way, but if that's what you want...

Augment-Weave Armor
Pirate Prototype Shield

Weapons depend on whether you're going Melee or Ranged
Melee: Custom Shock Gear + FZR Fire Suppression System. Best vs enemies that don't have Freezing Resist*. Fire the FZR first, then hit them with melee if they get the 'Deep Freeze' status effect for 4 rounds of double damage (because Crushing on the CSG).
If you're going Melee, you want a way to hit Flying enemies: Light Jetpack, certain types of Wings or Lunge (a level 10 Mercenary perk).
*Decreases the chance of 'Deep Freeze' (~50% -> ~20%). Still useful, but not as reliable.

Ranged: Tri-Beam Rifle/Lash Cannon + Trick Bracer. Special mention to Heavy Slut Ray (Lust Damage + Stun Chance, works with Overcharge but not Second Shot) and Hirudo Devourer (absorb Health).
I haven't actually played a Ranged Tech Specialist, so...

Accessories depend on if you're going Drone or not. Tam-Wolf 2.0 if you are, Shield Aug Bracers/Light Jetpack if you're not.
The Shield Defense systems sound good, but they only benefit you if you actually lose Shields. I think Tech Specialist Shields are actually too durable for Defense Systems to be useful.
Special mention to Bimbo Siegwulfe and Allure; both of which are extremely useful if you want to Tease as a primary combat tactic. Bimbo Siegwulfe gives +5 Tease and an extra Tease attack each round. While it doesn't scale with Drone Perks, it's allowed me to defeat several enemies that are normally much more annoying. Including at least one I didn't know could be defeated by Tease. Allure is +7 Sexiness and a large Libido increase. Since Tease success rate is tied to Libido, this is especially useful early, before you've increased Libido much. It's also significantly cheaper than the Siegwulfe. And easier to get with the Save Editor, since Siegwulfe is implemented in a non-standard way.

We're about to get a new Public release* with new Weapons and Armor, so that might factor into your decisions. Though you'd have to wait until they're added to the Save Editor or progress enough to purchase them in-game.
*First Patch of each month is always public. Sometimes there's a 2nd release afterward with major bug fixes.

Tech Specialists have the worst Energy recovery. Melee gets around it by having the best buff in the game cost only 15 Energy for the full fight (and can recover 33/40 Energy 1/fight), but Ranged might want to think about other ways to recover Energy, unless you don't mind Resting. Granted, most combats can be beaten entirely with standard attacks if you maxed your attack stat (Intelligence for Melee, Aim for Ranged), so you might not be using Energy as much as I think.
You can recover Energy via Hand Milk Masturbation. Energy scales with milk stored in your largest breast row. More than 20,000 mLs and you get nothing. Best used with the Mega Milk perk and Honey, the Treated Milk perk gives an additional 10 x (Liters, min 1) Energy. The Prostitute Pro Cybernetic Implant is supposed to restore Energy, but is currently bugged so it doesn't (I'm hoping the bug fix marathon going on today will get around to it)*. Recruiting Yammi allows you to eat to restore Energy when on your ship and get an item that restores 70 Energy on use. Energizing Libido requires you to have at least 40 Libido, but you don't lose Energy from orgasms. And gives a small chance to restore Energy on orgasm.
*It didn't, but the Blog post indicates Fenoxo will probably do another pass tomorrow. If he does, he'll certainly get to the report, at least.
*Prostitute Pro has been fixed in 0.8.106.

Dumb4Cum is hilariously overpowered on a Tech Specialist*. 7 Intelligence/level instead of 5, auto-increases your Intelligence score, if you go long enough you can actually get more Intelligence back than you lost, saving you stat points. All you have to do is suck a cock at least once every 48 hours.
*Shield Defense, Accuracy, Shield Restoration, Paralyze chance/damage, Drone damage, Charge Weapon damage, Overcharge Stun Chance, Shield Hack damage, Thermal/Gravidic Disruptor damage all depend on Intelligence.

Those two zil are balanced for level 2 Steeles, IIRC, so tackling them as your first enemy is probably going to result in a loss. Also, they don't kill you; outside quests and bosses, most enemies won't end your playthrough if you lose to them (though some enemies from Myrellion onwards will give you a Bad End if you lose to them enough times).
I've beaten them at level 1, but you do need to get some lucky crits and use your status-attack (Paralyzing Shock for Tech Specialists). Or you could fuck them. There are even a few bosses that don't end the game if you lose, but it's not something to count on. The fight at the first Probe cones to mind.

There's also Easy Mode, which can be turned on in the options. 50% extra resistances to everything.

Edit to clear up Hand Milk. I've learned some things.

THAT answers literally all my questions.
Except maybe about editing the MC's body. Does the race of the wings or limbs/tail matter all that much?

Races work on a threshold point system. Human requires 4+ (max 6). You'll notice Wings and Tail deduct 1 point each already, changing limbs will also decrease your score by 1 (and increase whatever Race you're using). You can probably be Human with Wings and a Tail of whatever type, but anything more than that will likely push you out of Human and into Alien Hybrid if nothing else. However, I notice Genitals, Tongue and Horns aren't counted (so you can have whatever you want, there). Some sub-races are pretty specific, check out the Avian variants, for example. You can check your current Racial breakdown in the Codex.

Only certain wing types are capable of granting flight capability (avian, bee, demonic, draconic, dragonfly, sylvan, dark sylvan, mothrine, dove, gryvain and frostwyrm). Limb/tail types don't really matter, though having more or fewer than two legs will lock you out of a lot of scenes.

wait, fewer? like a torso stump?

Also, does anyone know how to make progress on that last probe planet? I feel like i've done everything i can, and that's not much. Is it the newest addition?

Naga (Snake/Shark 'legs').

Yes, the Dhaal is under active development. William* has been writing one of the plot locations and has made good progress, as I understand it. We should see some plot progression soonish. And hopefully level 11. They've said they intend to increase the level cap on this planet, but also that they don't increase the cap until there are enemies to fight with it.
*One of the writers. He has a thread that's usually on the 1st page of the forum if you want to check out what he's doing.
