So the Amber Orb, Fox Amulet, Amulet of Transference, whatever you want to call it, the thing that puts you on the Kikyo Quests. Is there any reason currently to not pick it up? There's a whole thing about it binding your fate and everything, but at least from what I saw all it does is say if you want all the Kikyo and Kinu stuff, it doesn't lock you out of anything else that I could see.

Short answer: nope.

Long answer: there was going to be an alternate path for an upcoming conflict between Keros and someone else, and picking up the orb would've prevented you from siding with that other character. Since that alternate path has been scrapped, you're going to be siding with Keros anyways so you won't miss out on anything by picking it up.

Is there a degree of writer favoritism for Keros and his Kitsune children in the writing staff? Are there some massive weebs involved?

I like Kiyoko fox-wife and little Kinu (along with her many siblings) number amongst the PCs beloved children but still get that feelings sometimes, like the staff just can't get enough of those fluffy tails folded over 9000 times.
