What exactly does Fortification do? What is the difference to Defense?

Which should I prioritize?

Fortification gives you more hp. Defense reduces incoming damage.

Depends on your class and playstyle. For my money, Mercs should go for a combination of both, especially since Second Wind is percentage based.

Yeah, what Sumgai said. As a Techie it's your shield defense that matters, so armor that increases shielding is better. I would assume Smugglers should prioritize defense to mitigate damage when the enemy manages to hit them.

Eh, I just use whatever has the most evasion on my smuggler. She may get hit harder than the other two classes when she does get hit, but she has a 57% chance to dodge attacks.

57% is still a failing grade! I commend your bravery in leaving whether you live or die up to what's virtually a coin flip! . . . Wait, your first name wouldn't happen to be Harvey, would it? ;)

How the hell do you calculate your evasion chance? I can't seem to find the hit and damage formula anywhere.

Evasion is a 1:1 ratio, each +1 equals 1%. Damage can be calculated easily if you know your bonuses and such, but under your Stats in the Codex it very clearly shows all of your combat numbers.

About evasion - thanks for answering my question, good to know! But by 'damage formula' I meant 'damage received'. So.., how does 'defense' stat work? Is it a percentage decrease or flat - to damage received? or any other formula? I want to evaluate what type of shield is optimal for me.

I believe Defense is a flat subtraction per attack, but I don't know if it applies before or after resistances. The best type of shield is still the one with higher shielding, unless your Smuggler wants that extra 4 Evasion instead of a -3. At least I believe it should be, I don't know much about Mercs, but the shield's resistances and Defense applies completely separately from armor resistances and Defence.
