Which ones go best with certain builds?
Do weapons/armors always just go well with the obvious class?

And what kind of stats should I be looking for in a weapon/armor? Should I be wanting my weapons and armors to be say upwards of 25damage for mid-late content?

I'm trying an Archer and a Charmer, got plans for a cape wearing warrior also. Got a bunch of stuff I'm going to try down the road.

There are some less than obvious combos but it depends on how you're setting your character up. Thieves for example gain a very nice damage boost from their Twist the Knife perk so they can benefit heavily from weapons you wouldn't immediately think of as going with a thief-y type of character. Charmers likewise can make good summoners with their Presence stat so while it might look silly they benefit from the Helm of Heroes if that's how you're setting them up, and so on.

For an archer-type it's not too hard to figure out gear because you need a weapon with the Ranged tag to take advantage of those skills. The early selection of weapons is mainly a set of tradeoffs between slightly more damage, armor penetration or accuracy, but if for some reason you want a shield or offhand weapon you can use the Sling. Later on you'll get some unique options that have various advantages and disadvantages and later still you can buy the scroll-type weapons from the Kitsune Den which are also considered Ranged. Those do magical/mental damage with elemental effects and while they're more meant for a spellcaster due to also being Catalysts they'll work for an archer too, if you're just thinking in gameplay terms and don't care for the mental RP aspect of being an actual archer.

Just for reference, I play a White Mage with an archery skillset for funsies and it works quite well despite not being optimized for either of those roles, so there's a lot of flexibility and you don't have to stress too much about having an ideal setup unless you really want to.

Right now I've got the Whitewood (?) Bow or something like that. I tried looking at the wiki but I don't see other bow weapons with more than 50 or so total damage?

I also went thief for evasion, and diversionary tactics which I feel fit an archer well.

What would you say are the mid-grade to top end equipment for each class are?

Currently the Bessy Mauler will probably do the most damage among ranged weapons but it comes with Accuracy and Evasion penalties to balance out that Armor Penetration stat and it comes with the Heavy tag so your Initiative suffers as well.

As for other weapons it's pretty much the same thing, though for someone who's going to be a dedicated spellslinger the Spiraled Staff remains a very solid choice as long as you don't mind it being two-handed, or you could stick with the Blade Staff you get right at the start which is a better melee weapon but a slightly worse magic-booster. The fact that the latter is still a viable piece of gear should tell you everything you need to know about the flexibility there is in equipment.

What kind of armor should a ranger / archer use? I'm still using leather set because I'm worried about heavy/initiative loss. Also, what about a charmer, what weapon do you even use for them??

Charmer's usually a resolve nuke so Aphrodisiac whip + Fox Jewel is a good combo. Both grant sexiness boosts and the latter does temptation too, just get it as a rare buy from Kohaku. If not the fox jewel just get the Rosebloom shield, tease damage gets turned to Pheromone damage with that equipped.

You get a pretty good set from the Winter City dungeon.

An important thing to note is that gear "progression" is mostly lateral. While dungeon and drop gear have a slightly higher budget than store-bought things, the goal is for the player to be able to finish the game, albeit with a little difficulty, with the things you can buy in Hawkethorne. Itemisation of gear is encouraged to tilt towards granting powers or interesting effects, rather than straight up stats. This game has no gear treadmill.
