It's another Tobs (and some Alypia written bits) quest, and you know what that means...

Thankfully there's a little less to sift through this time.

Also, at the time of me writing this there's some parts missing since the quest is currently bugged in some states, I'll be adding those whenever the hotfix comes out. :v

Wow, that was fast work. I'll have to poke through it once I've actually finished the quest myself.

Yeah, there's a bunch missing from this. The Guldring award stuff isn't here, but like you said, it might be bugged. But also you seem to be missing Etheryn's unique dialogue during the chat with Sanders (and, optionally Liaden) at the beginning and end of the quest that gives more backstory for the Dawnsword.

Aly please, I need a break...but yes I'll go and find em later, after hotfix.

I have to wait for public but have everyone maxed, what would be the best team for optimal extra content?

Liaden + Azyrran + Etheryn probably has the most words. Liazzy have a lot of interactivity with each other, and Ryn supplies additional backstory for the sword and Lumian flavor. If you don't have Liaden, though, there's a moment where some of your other companions get a chance to shine. Also, your companions can have a comment about the Guldring if you choose to let Liaden have the Dawnsword.

Berwyn is practically abandonware for most writers. Maybe once berry quest two is implemented he'll get stuff but for now nothing.

I only used Cait, Ryn, Azzy and hot lady Phoenix (sorry forgot her name).. I really liked Liaden and Azzy's interactions the most. And Zhara being mentioned.

I still have to do a DK run of it but my Champ that's on that path hasn't finished Winter Wolf yet so I've got to take care of that. In the interim I went back to a pre-Hive save so I could see the Lia-less scenes with different companions and those are a lot of fun. Still doing Liazzy runs for all my ongoing saves that don't involve the Champ ending up with the sword though. Between the adorable in-quest flirting and Azzy's post-quest squeeing over how awesome her girlfriend is, I just can't say no. xD

No, I meant going back to a save from before finishing Land of Milky Honey so I could see the version of the Dawnsword quest where Lia doesn't join you. I'm not sure if you have to go back that far or if it's the post-quest scene where you escort the brave lady on the treacherous journey across the street to the chapel that locks in her participation in High Ground but I had a save with the former condition so that's what I ran with. Mostly because I didn't actually lock in my Bimbochamp into that state for a good while (using Queenie to get the temporary perk instead) so I got a lot of later content done on that run while Azzy and Lia were just hanging out by the honey pool.

Not sure if it counts, but Ryn and Azzy have dialogue in Sanders' l o r e dump, Ryn gives even more lore about the frost elves, namely Siegbert's wife, and Azzy talks to Liaden a little after that, with Knight Azzy being a little blushy and giving a more thorough view on the current events, while Honey Maidem Azzy just does a lot on Liaden.

I tend to decide when to do quests in part based on the items granted -- can anyone say what the Dawnswords' special abilities are?

How do you even get these to pop do you have to lose the duel or just not accept the challenge?

Pure Dawnsword grants the Deflection power, which is an At-Will stance. +5 Evasion and the first ranged attack to target you each turn is negated and you automatically counterattack that enemy. Corrupted Dawnsword grants the Sword Soul power, which is an extremely powerful Encounter summon. You can see the stats on the wiki, the short version is that Pure Dawnsword has nice defensive effects as well as being a good weapon, Corrupted Dawnsword weakens your defenses but hits harder.

If Lia claims the Dawnsword then the Guldring you get in its place adds bonus Fire damage equal to half your Presence to all spell attacks; it also provides nice boosts to Spellpower, Spell Penetration and Leadership.

How does Lia claim it? I assume not beating the easiest duel in the game?

If Lia is present for the quest (it's technically possible to do it without her if you don't finish Land of Milky Honey first) and you decide not to duel the incubus, then after the fight there's a scene where you can choose to try and grab the sword yourself or distract the foe while Lia goes for it. If you try for the sword, Lia distracts the incubus long enough for the Champ to grab it and prove yourself a worthy bearer, and vice versa if Lia goes for the sword.

As Aly has said multiple times over on Discord, one of the goals of writing that quest was to make it so neither the Champ nor Lia comes off badly if they obtain the sword.

Thanks for the info. Now I need to squirrel out the abilities of the Ring of Fate and the Patrician's Mask (to compare the latter to the Helm of Heroes).

I'm amused at how deep a punish to ranged attacks the Dawnsword is since they seem to be the most insignificant attack type of melee/spell/ranged -- at least in the hands of NPCs.

Is the bonus damage folded into the normal spell damage or does it show up separately? I assume it affects anything with the spell tag? Pity there aren't any multi-hit spells at the moment.

I believe that's intentional. An item that gave you the parry ability of Nakano (even if it was just once per turn) would be incredibly hard to balance.

It's folded in and should apply to everything with the Spell tag, but I'm not sure if that also includes things like the bonus Holy damage done by Charge Weapon for example.

Oh yeah he does have a parry huh, but honestly how many ranged type enemies are there currently?

Well, I wouldnt've dreamed of introducing a parry ability for exactly that reason for any combat action type, and I'm as systems gung-ho as they come. It's just that no one needs to crush ranged attackers; you can just . . . ignore them. It's a comical overreaction but I'm here for it. The item has premium stats so it's no slouch, mind.

Ironically the corrupted version is slightly better in that regard. The ability already lets you block ranged attackers so the negative defensive stats don't matter much if they ever introduce an enviroment where there are many ranged enemies.

On a side note I really should do a corrupted playthrough sometime and experiment with that sword. Maybe once the combat rebalance and the next dungeon are out.

You're not the only person who's noticed that. It's been flagged for Balak to take a look at in the combat rebalance.
