I have the option to let Berwyn join the party, but I'd have to get rid either Cait or Brint to do that.

The first question is who should I choose?

The next question would be how to choose future companions.

Thanks!

You do realize that every companion hangs out at the Frost Hound and can be added or removed from the party at will, right? This isn't really a choice with implications beyond the next few minutes of gameplay.

Who you pick to accompany you at any given moment can be decided based on your current needs if you know a particular setup will be really effective (bringing mages to enemies weak to magic, bringing Brint to fights with anything squishy, etc.) or you can just play with whichever combination of characters you like and most of the time you'll do just fine even if it's not an optimal mix.

There are also certain events/quests that require a specific companion to be in your party in order to proc.

Yeah, switching someone out doesn't mean they're lost forever. Experiment a bit!

As for "who should be in your party", that depends on a lot of things! Not in order of importance:
  1. What skills does your Champion have?
  2. What enemies will you be fighting?
  3. Is there any companion-required content that you want to see/do?
  4. Who do you want to fuck in camp at night?
If your Champion isn't a tank, you'll probably want to keep Brint in for awhile; he's not a real tank, but he can fake it well enough for low-level content.

If you're expecting lots of enemies weak to Resolve damage, Berry's a great option because he has an anti-Resolve ability. But if your Champ has a summon, be careful about bringing Berry, because he also has a summon and you can only have one of those out at a time.

Both Berry and Cait have heals, but Cait is better at healing and buffing, while still having a decent amount of fire magic damage.

Thanks for the replies!

I think I'll keep Cait and Brint for now and see how it goes.

As for sexing, I am gynosexual so unless there is an option to change Berwyn's or Brin's gender (there were some potions like that in CoC1), that leaves Cait.

Companion TFing in CoC2 is limited to a few variables that the writers can account for, so for the most part that means no genderbending... but Brint is the exception because that is his variable. There's a quest you can do which (depending on your actions) can result in Brint becoming Brienne. It's a one-way transformation, fair warning.

Quin is the strongest Resolve fighter available. And he doesn’t have a summon to overwrite yours with.

Basically what everyone else said, you can keep companions you recruit, even when you don't take them back to the Frosthouse by yourself. Go for whoever suits the thing you're tackling best, but there's no harm in sticking to who you like the most either. Brint and Cait are as Starter companion as they can be but are also rather solid for the most part until there is something the bull can't just brute force you through or you're a White Mage (Which render's Cait redundant). But I haven't had any issues using them either.

Depends on how you set up your White Mage champion. :D I've got mine designed more as an old-school Final Fantasy WM (basically, trappy boy Rosa) which means that Cait's still useful for covering things that my Champion can't do because some of his power slots are devoted to archery skills. It's not at all an optimal build but it's a lot of fun.

This the classes are mostly set up so you are not railroaded into one possible build with them. When I do WM I give them mirror stance song of storms group heal or shield of light and summon. Then I use them as a tank/summoner/buff hybrid and you cover pretty much everything except resolve combat if you have this with Cait and Brint[even ghosts because song of storms on Brint is op].

Edit: The point of this ramble was to show that you can get pretty creative with the main character and experimenting with the builds can be a lot of fun.

It's my first game, so I followed the strategy I used with CoC1 -- start as a fighter, get tons of HP, use the holy sword (keeping corruption low), then collect some decent spells.

Obviously it doesn't work exactly this way in CoC2, but I'm playing it mostly for the fetish stuff anyway.

Yep! Quin's great.

It just seemed like the OP didn't have access to all of the companions yet, so I only talked about the ones that were in the post.

It depends on what you're playing. 2 damage dealers and 1 healer is my standard strategy and has worked perfectly well for any fight. If you're playing as a healer you might want to use Brint/Brienne along with another damage-oriented companion.
I personally find Cait irreplaceable due to her abilities though.

I think what I am going to do is level most of my companions up fully. That way I can see what their full capabilities are. Also see how they do against specific enemies.

And I used to pretty much be a Brint/Cait party. But lately I have been going with Berwyn and Bunny Boy. Berwyn has a nice summons and decent magic. And I like Quint's abilities vs tease vulnerable opponents.

Etheryn has a permanent place on my party roster. I just popped in to say that.

Also to parrot most of what everybody else has been saying. Alter your party accordingly depending on what you expect to fight, and how they mesh with your own build. If you're a tanky fellow, you aren't going to need Atugia. If you're a healer, Cait isn't going to be the best pick available. So on, so forth.
