I get the message that since I don’t have any storage space on the planet, so I can only buy + trade a ship, and I don’t want to sell my first ship. Is there any way around this?

Buy a throwaway ship from Vahn on Tarkus, then trade it to Focalor.

You can also get a really nice ship from the next planet (Zheng Shi) for free, so you might want to hold off. Though you do lose the ship you're flying at the time, so buying a throwaway might be a good idea anyway..

I just got the Aegis after saving up for it, you mean I’m going to have it blown up as soon as I reach the next planet? should I try going with a cheaper ship?

The Aegis is perfectly sufficient for all Ship content currently in the game. If you want to recruit Olympia or do most of Dr. Teyaal's content, you do have to steal the Sidewinder. Otherwise, it's purely optional. You can go to Zheng Shi, do the quests, leave, come back with a throwaway and steal it then, if you like.

Oh, okay, I though the ship blowing up was an obligatory event that happened when you entered the Zheng Shi base.
