Patreon is a monthly affair. You get access to backer builds for a month until you need to renew your support/membership/whatever the heck they're calling it now @_@

Public builds include everything in the backer builds, but only come out once a month. Backer builds come out several times a week.
The various tier rewards (bear in mind that each tier gives the same reward as the one before it, e.g. the $10 tier has its own reward as well the 5):
$5 - you get access to the new content weeks before they go public.
$10 - Access to art by Adj, Shou or other artists. Or certain scenes are condensed into an easy to read pdf form.
$20 - Name added to the credits
$30 - A TiTS usb-flash drive as well as high quality art or a character pin.

never played a merc myself, but you need to specify a ranged or melee specialist. I know there are different builds and gear between the two.

Generally speaking though, take all the perks from one column only, don't mix and match because you'll end up with an incredibly weak character. Either ranged or melee, pick one and stick with it.
Ranged mercenaries benefit more from kinetic weapons rather than lasers or more esoteric ones. Aim for the Stormbull Shotgun or the Railgun.
Melee mercenaries are better off with something like the Frozen Spire spear or the Plasma Hawk, back up by the Warden Shield.
