Can you tap map squares to move? You might have to turn it on in the Options.

That's what i did until i needed to go up and down an elevator like this one

Can you give more details about what Android and version of the operating system you're using?

Also, was the arrow and circle in the background always there?
Doing some investigating, it looks like it might be part of the new overlay. What happens if you turn it off in Options->Controls?

The arrow and circle has been there since the previous update but it didn't really bother me much

A hot fix was put out yesterday due to the initial release lacking the arrows, you may have to re-download the most recent patch
