3d Modeling Software

Hey all,

Zane here. Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm working on yet-another-survival-transformation-text-game and am considering adding in some 3D models as I'm seeing quite a few (Gates, Stranded, Coceter Chronicles, etc.) have them integrated. I wasn't planning on it originally as that's not where my skills tend to lie, and if it's more than I can handle, I won't. (I'm not the kind of person to do something half-assed if it's better not to do it.)

So, does anyone have any recommendations on free 3D modeling software? DAZ seems to be the best one going support-wise in the free category, but there might be others that I'm missing.

Thanks,

-Zane

well, DAZ Studio is free and relatively easy to use. I'm using it myself for my current game project.

But the assets like 3D models, environments, textures all cost money to use and some of them can get really expensive.
Yes, you get some basic assets with the free version included but if your aim is some porno stuff you need to buy genitals and other stuff for your characters as they don't have them included.

As long as you use DAZ to render 3D stuff into 2D images you don't need the 500$ indie-gameveloper license either but if you intend to use them in a 3D engine (Unity3D, etc) you can easily spend 2000$ in license fees only depending on the artists material you use as most of them require a separate 500$ (or higher) license ...see the EULA under section 3.0 for more details http://www.daz3d.com/eula

Like the others said Daz is good I know I'm using it atm. But although it and the basic models are free, if you want anything special be prepared to pay for it.

Glad I am using mine in a pure 2d format, I didn't know about the requirements of buying a license for 3d modeling. I thought the license was only for people who were making games to sell commercially.

please anybody correct me if I'm wrong but that's how I interpreted that gibberish in the EULA...
and the indie licenses only apply if you have <100k $ annual income (personal or business)... if you have more, you need the 2500-5000$ licenses (for each content artist you use material from)

I think your right, that is what I was trying to say in my reply. )))

Personally I hate reading legal doc's there so damn illegible, that it's almost impossible to get a correct understanding (Unless your a lawyer), but until someone says differently that is how I will be treating what you said originally as what the EULA says. Thanks for the heads up.

Story of my life...

And yeah, I'd only be using it as 2D prints as a supplement for a free game or two. But Daz crashed 3 times while I was trying to go through the tutorial bit, so I think I'll stay away for now.

Thanks

rendering 3D stuff can go rough on your computer hardware... you should have at least a somewhat capable setup to even  think about it.
not saying that low end hardware can't render 3D stuff...but it would take ages and might cause you more troube with crashes and overheating.
I render with 2 watercooled Nvidia GTX970 and 32GB of RAM and my render time is still not as fast as I'd like it to be ^^

AMD FX 8320 octacore with 16gb memory and Radon R9 200 DoubleD. Whole set up cost me ~800USD a couple years back. Not the best, but I haven't run into too many problems yet.

I am using a basic p4 2.3ghz, with an Nvidia 700 something series with 2 gigs ram, and 4 gigs system ram atm, and it works as long as I DO NOT go over 3 models. If I get to much it craps out on me pretty hard, and the render time jumps rather high the more models I add in. (Around 45 - 90 minutes with 1 model and no props just clothes and hair. Then if I add a second model and a chair, couch, house what ever..... I'm looking around 3 - 6 hours. 2 models with hair and clothes.... Maybe 2 - 3 hours.

It's brutal, but its fun to play with it and see what is possible with the system. But honestly Daz almost made me quit when I first started using it because some things were very NOT user friendly, and it took a lot of research to find the few answers I did, but I still cant figure out some things. (Like how to render at different image qualities. (Low end test renders, mid range bulk renders, or high end sexy renders.)
