Unsure if this is a bug or specific to my old computer.
In the offline/downloaded version, the map icons occasionally disappear; reloading and restarting the game does not fix this issue. I do not seem to have this issue in the online browser version.
Unknown if relevant: On the occasions I do have map icons, when switching menus or interacting with characters the screen flashes for a moment. When I return to the map, icons are gone.
