In the talk with Sanders labeled "The Order" you ask him what brought him out to Hawkthorne and he responds:
"Retirement," the old man laughs. "I left the Order five years ago, back to the life of a mere priest now that my days as a warrior are behind me."
But that doesn't really make sense. We know he was already helping found Hawkthorne 20 years ago when Gweyr did her thing and that he stuck around more or less the whole time afterwards. The way his conversation with Selima is written also implies that the incident with Gweyr is what made him become a Velunite, which adds an extra layer timeline fuckery to this whole thing.
