Came on today and for some reason now I can't progress past the old forest as its greyed out. I tried downloading the .42 patch to see if it would make any difference but it didn't. I was not sure if this was a bug or is there a new criteria you have to meet before to can proceed to Alraune ?

Define 'greyed out'. Are you on the northmost tile in the forest with the exclamation mark? Is the option to progress not appearing? Have you seen any of the conversations that clue the Champion in to the existence of the Alraune?
I just loaded up a file and was able to get the event to proc so it's nothing wrong with the game so far as I can tell.
